I recently read a quote from someone that I really liked. It said ‘God doesn’t love us equally, He loves us uniquely.’ I really like that. I’ve taught that concept, probably with a lot of words and not nearly as clear as said in the quote. I will find out who said it, steal it, and use it in the future.
I recently spent the entire weekend without my wife, left to be in charge of my three daughters. We had a blast! Forts, cartoons, candy, board games, and dance parties filled our time. My oldest daughter Raphaela made a fort out of chairs, stools, blankets, pillows and laundry baskets; heavy books held the blankets to the chairs and couch. She was very meticulous in her building, everything she did had a purpose. She even made room for me and both of our cats. My middle child Epaggelia (or Pepper as we call her) made herself what she calls a pillow patch. It was an arena of pillows and stuffed animals with a blanket in the middle for her to lay on. She had pillows cover her instead of blankets. When I asked her why she told me ’cause I like it.’ She was so proud of herself. Both girls were so proud, but I was honestly more proud and excited by what I saw. Two different personalities thriving when given creative control over a project. Their forts represented them so perfectly. One was all about order, one was all about innovation.
I loved getting to spend time with each of them, doing things that only they would like. Rapha loves Chutes And Ladders but Pepper doesn’t care so much. Pepper wants to cuddle, Rapha would rather alone. Pepper loves to get wild and do what she calls the ‘ninja dance’, Rapha laughs and joins in. My baby SolaGratia just loves to be a part of the team until she goes to bed before everyone else. She has all her own idiosyncrasies that make her mother and I squeal with delight. She is different than her sisters.
I love my kids for who they are, and I can only begin to imagine how much our Father God loves us. If I delight in little things my kids say and do, He must be crazy about the things we do. I know our capacity to love and understand is a fraction of a fraction of what He has. Scriptures sing of God’s unrelenting love for us, it’s impossible that He would only be able to love us in a uniformed sense. The more my kids discover things about themselves and share it with us, the more fulfilled and delighted we become. The more we discover about ourselves and share it with the Lord is to His glory.
