2019 was the best year of my life. Unfortunately the way I listened to music was forced to change because my old school iPod classic broke and my record player was out of commission. I caught up with the rest of the world and now mostly stream music. I have access to so much music, but there’s no ownership. When I say this to people I’m met by confused stares. I continue to be misunderstood by most, but I am embracing this more and more. I’m getting used to streaming, and it is nice to have everything at my disposal. So instead of complaining that I’m not really bonding by physically holding onto something I’m going to appreciate I can consume without regard!
This was the most redemptive year of my life, bar none. I overcame lifelong mental struggles and was restored into full time ministry. My faithful God loves me with unfailing love. Here is the soundtrack!
- Ceremony: In The Spirit World Now- The greatest hardcore band of the 21st century continues to evolve into the greatest post punk band of the 21st century. This album is their best one yet, and I have loved every album they’ve recorded.

- Little Brother: May The Lord Watch- Everything I love in good classic hip hop.

- DIIV: Deceiver- If I had to pick my favorite song of the year it’s DIIV’s ‘Skin Game’. I’m sure the shoegaze wave is coming to an end soon, but I really appreciate what these guys are doing.

- Kanye West: Jesus Is King- I’ve always rejected Kanye but I love his boldness!! This isn’t art, it’s full blown ministry. What a great story!

- Glitterer: Looking Through The Shades- The dude from Title Fight has a new project. I miss Title Fight, but this will fill in the gap nicely. I love his minimalist approach, I find it charming.

- Turnover: Altogether- I never knew these guys as a pop-punk band, this relaxed dream pool side sound is why I’ve tuned in. It wouldn’t be out of place playing over the loudspeakers at your local Gap.

- Angel Du$t: Pretty Buff- Super catchy candy coated music made by hardcore kids could be a winning combination or a forgettable disaster. I landed on winning combination, but it took me a few listens to get there. I’m glad I hung in, it is a winner.

- Young Guv: GUV I & II- My wife and I saw these guys open for Culture Abuse this year, they totally stole the show. Some of it is power-pop like The Cars (R.I.P. Ric Ocasek) and some of it like Ariel Pink.

- Protomartyr: No Passion All Technique- I’ve heard about these guys for years but never got into them. Luckily streaming music makes it so you don’t purchase anything and can listen to everything. That enables you to find bands that are awesome like Protomartyr. I’m glad punk rock like this is being made.

- Plague Vendor: By Night- A lot of energy, a lot of focus (That’s a quote from ‘The Other Guys’ that describes these guys.). I think most of the bands making aggressive music right now are not great, so thankful for something that still rocks.

Honorable Mentions- Czarface & Ghostface Killah: Czarface Meers Ghostface
James Blake: Assume Form
American Football: American Football (LP3)
Ducktails: Watercolors
The Chemical Brothers: No Geography
Beck: Hyperspace
Biggest Disappointment- La Dispute: Panorama- High hopes dashed, please stop whispering.
