It’s easy to say you love Bugs Bunny, but check your heart. Do you really love him? When was the last time you got quiet and just sat with him? When was the last time you let his words cut to the core of your soul? When was the last time you marathoned your favorite Looney Tunes shorts and made your children rate them on a scale of 1 to 100? I don’t just say I love Bugs, I actually love him and all his gang. I actually might like Daffy Duck better.
All sacrilege aside, I used my 35th birthday to compile and watch my favorite cartoons with my family. It took me a while to actually make the list because there are so many great ones. My list had to be whittled down from about 70 shorts to 15. I wanted to include classics like ‘Rabbit of Seville’ and ‘Ballot Box Bunny’, but as I Marie Kondo’d the list I had what I had. By the end of the marathon the children were sick of watching Looney Tunes, but I didn’t care. It was my birthday for crying out loud!
I love watching The Flintstones and SpongeBob SquarePants, but as I get older I realize more and more how timeless and incomparable the original Warner Brothers cartoons really are. The perfectly timed comedy of these cartoons are rarely matched by anything, animated or not. They were drawn and colored in a way that inspires awe in me. I don’t know very much about art, but I know that if I’m ever going to spend money on something to hang up it would be artwork from Chuck Jones cartoons. It’s unfortunate that many see these cartoons as something for kids and ignore, trivialize them. So here’s my definitive list for you, go find them and enjoy!
